Day 2: The God Of Coincidences
Scripture: Exodus 2
A coincidence can be defined as a remarkable concurrence of events or circumstances without an apparent connection. Notice the word “apparent.”
So often, circumstances happen and we see them as coincidences instead of the movement of God. The title of today's devotional was written "tongue in cheek." With God, there really are no such things as coincidences.
Just look at the so-called “coincidences” in Exodus 2. Moses’ mom just happens to put her baby boy on the river that just happens to float to where the daughter of Pharaoh decides to bathe. Baby Moses just happens to start crying which causes Pharaoh’s daughter to take pity on him.
Moses, who was a Jewish boy, who should have been executed according to Pharaoh’s edict, grows up and becomes the grandson of Pharaoh. Only a sovereign God could write such a script! Later in the chapter we see the “coincidences” that ultimately led to Moses getting married.
All of these events were orchestrated by God so that Moses would ultimately deliver His people out of the bondage of slavery in Egypt. But as we see in today's reading, Moses wasn't ready to lead the people. He made a rash decision and committed murder.
We don’t always rise to the occasion when God orchestrates His plans for our lives. To put it bluntly, God always does his part well, but we don’t. Aren’t you thankful his mercies are new every morning?
It would’ve appeared that Moses had blown his chance when he literally took matters into his own hands by killing the Egyptian. But we serve a second chance God! And a third, and a fourth, and a fifth…
God did not give up on Moses. We see at the end of the chapter that He hadn't given up on His chosen people either. And guess what? God does not give up on us either!
At the end of the chapter it says that the people groaned and cried out. The text says that God saw them and He heard them. In the next chapter, God is going to respond to their tears and begin to activate His plan of redemption.
Just let these truths soak in. God is governing the galaxies. He knows every star by name. He ordains when the sparrow lives and dies. And yet, despite ruling the world, He is very present to each of us. He is transcendent, above and beyond, and yet He is also immanent, very near and present.
He sees your tears. He hears your cries for help. And in His sovereignty He is using the circumstances of life to lead you to His will. The God of coincidences? No, He is the God who's in control. A God who has a reason and a plan for what He's authoring and/or allowing in your life.
