That’s All Folks!
Exodus 40
When I was a kid we had far less cartoons to choose from. One of the most watched cartoons was Looney Tunes, starring Bugs Bunny. This gray-and-white rabbit was quite the trickster. His most famous line was, “Eh… What’s up, doc?” And at the end of each episode, Porky Pig would stammer, “That’s all folks!”
A fun way of saying that the cartoon was finished.
Exodus 40 is the final chapter of the book, which reveals the completion of Moses erecting the tabernacle just as the Lord had commanded. The end of v. 33 says, “So Moses finished the work.”
And once he did, an incredible thing happened, according to v. 34: “the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.” God revealed Himself to His people in a powerful way. It may look different today, but we, too can experience the powerful presence of the Lord. Like Moses, we should cry out, “Show me your glory!”
Based on this chapter, and really the entire book of Exodus, I want to end this devotional by giving three important principles on how we can experience the powerful presence of God in our own lives.
#1 Pay close attention to the instructions of the Lord.
This is one of the things that most impresses me about Moses. He wasn’t perfect. Remember the striking of the rock incident? However, for the most part, his life was marked by obedience to the Lord’s commands. Can the same be said of us?
D.L. Moody once said that “The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible.” The Bible reveals what God desires for us. When we start living in disobedience to His Word, we will stop studying His Word. I’ve never known a person who has powerfully experienced God’s presence without being in the Word regularly.
#2 Pursue holiness by yielding to the Holy Spirit's anointing power.
When the tabernacle was erected, God had Moses anoint the tent and the items in it with oil. The tabernacle was being set apart as holy. In the Bible, the Holy Spirit is compared to anointing oil. God gave the Holy Spirit to help us pursue holiness. In fact, Romans 1:4 refers to Him as “the Spirit of holiness.”
Holiness matters if we want to experience God’s presence. Hebrews 12:14 says, “Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.” The Spirit of God uses the Word of God to help produce holy men and women of God. Want to experience God’s presence? Read His Word, and respond when the Spirit leads you in how to obey it.
#3 Prioritize the presence of God above all else.
Moses went from a reluctant leader in the opening chapters of Exodus, to a man consumed with following God. Moses went from focusing on himself and his shortcomings to a man who just wanted to experience God’s glory. What a great example for us all. May we seek God and His glory above all things.
